Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is
defined as the cessation of breathing during sleep. Sleep apnea is
a disorder affecting about 18 million Americans that has the
potential for serious, and even fatal complications. Sleep apnea
is a disorder characterized by a reduction or cessation (pause of
breathing, airflow) during sleep. Sleep apnea is formally defined
as an apnea-hypopnea index of at least 15 episodes/hour in a
patient without medical problems that may be related to the sleep
apnea. Sleep apnea is usually accompanied by snoring. Sleep apnea
is also associated with high blood pressure, a known risk factor
for stroke. Sleep apnea is associated with poorer survival in
patients with heart failure.
Sleep
Sleep apnea can cause serious problems if it isn't treated. Sleep
apnea often results in feelings of fatigue and excessive daytime
sleepiness, since the ability to reach deep, restorative sleep
stages is impaired. Sleep apnea has a strong association with
several diseases, particularly those related to the heart and
circulation. Sleep apnea in stroke patients is also associated
with a higher risk for worse symptoms after a stroke, including
delirium, depression, poor response to speech, and difficulty
conducting daily chores. Sleep apnea appears to pose a
particularly risk for nocturnal epilepsy, a condition in which
seizures occur during sleep.
Airway
Obstructive sleep apnea Obstructive sleep apnea is characterized
by repetitive pauses inbreathing during sleep due to the
obstruction and/or collapse of the upperairway (throat), usually
accompanied by a reduction in blood oxygen saturation, and followed
by an awakening to breathe. |
